General FAQ
I sent my EquiSal test to you but haven’t had my result, how long does it take?
We test all samples within three working days (our working days are Monday to Friday). Please be aware, these turnaround times are dependent upon when the sample is delivered to our lab, and we, like everyone else, depend on Royal Mail delivering quickly and efficiently.

I submitted a sample for testing and want to enquire about my results. What is the best way to do this?
- For EquiSal, please provide the sample barcode, horse name, EquiSal stockist and the date you posted your sample.
- Please also check your Junk/Spam email folders in case you have already received the result.
- You may also wish to contact your stockist as they may have already been sent the result.
- For blood/serum test results (tapeworm & redworm), please contact your veterinary practice who arranged to have the test carried out.

I don’t have a barcode, can I still send my sample?
The barcode is the unique identifier that enables us to ensure your test is tracked throughout the testing process so please contact your stockist as they will have your details logged against the barcode they supplied with the test kit, this can then be hand-written onto the EquiSal tube.

I have dropped the swab on the floor; what should I do?
Providing the swab is not dirty, you can continue your saliva collection, but please inform us of the incident on the paperwork.

I have spilt the preservative solution from the saliva swab storage tube; what should I do?
The preservative solution is essential to ensure the sample remains stable during postage. Please discard the sample you have collected. You can purchase a replacement swab and tube through our website to collect an additional sample - you will only be charged the cost-price together with a small postage charge (UK only). Do not add anything else to the saliva swab storage tube as this will result in unreliable diagnosis.

The indicator is taking a very long time to turn pink, what can I do?
Check the foam end is still pushed firmly onto the handle, but it can take longer than expected to collect enough sample if the horse’s mouth is dry.

My horse has eaten a small amount of food/hay/grass within the half hour before the saliva collection; will this be OK?
No, it is critical that the horse must not have eaten anything at all. A result will not be obtained if the horse is producing too much saliva and will result in a retest being required.

My horse’s mouth is very dry and I can’t collect enough saliva; what should I do?
If you have been trying to collect saliva for longer than 5 minutes, place the swab back in the foil packet and then try feeding your horse a few mouthfuls of hay - wait for half an hour before trying to collect saliva again.

My horse has swallowed the saliva swab; will it be alright?
The swab has a rounded, short design intended for easy passage through the intestines. If you feel concerned, you should contact your veterinary practice for advice.

My horse has broken the swab; what should I do?
You can purchase a replacement swab (or swab and tube) through our website. You will only be charged the cost price together with a small postage charge. (UK only). Click HERE for the online SHOP.

What time of year is it best to test with EquiSal?
You can use the tests at any time of the year and get reliable results, but the optimum time would ideally be Spring and Autumn.

Can EquiSal be used for Donkeys?
Although it is expected that the test works for all equids, including donkeys, we haven’t specifically validated the test for donkeys. All the validation was carried out on horses. We did carry out tests on donkeys during our research and have tested a number of donkeys since the launch of EquiSal.
